Strategy and Performance Specialist

Jim

I specialize in advising family businesses with a focus on strategy and building organizational operating systems that drive high performance.

My career has spanned multiple industries, including energy, chemicals, agribusiness, and private equity, giving me a broad and diverse perspective on what it takes to succeed in business.

With a background in engineering, I started my journey in research and development before moving into sales, marketing, investment analysis, and eventually into executive leadership roles.

I hold an MBA from Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business, where I graduated with highest honors as a Fuqua Scholar, concentrating in Finance, Strategy, and Marketing. My foundation in business is complemented by a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering from Washington University in St. Louis.

Over the years, I’ve had the opportunity to serve as CFO, CEO, and Chairman in both public and private companies, ranging from startups to large enterprises with revenues exceeding $50 billion.

My expertise lies in strategy, finance, operations, and sales and marketing.

I’ve also led several successful turnarounds for distressed companies, helping them navigate challenges and achieve sustainable growth.

One of my key strengths is developing performance operating systems—a framework I’ve refined over the years that aligns leadership, strategy, and organizational structure to enhance performance.

During my 12 years at Koch Industries and later in private equity, I was often brought in to address complex business challenges, whether it was integrating companies post-merger or improving performance in a new strategic context.

I’m particularly passionate about working with private companies, where I believe my impact can be most profound, helping them overcome growth challenges and optimize their operations.

Outside of work, I enjoy flyfishing and hiking. I find these activities give me an appreciation for nature and a sense of self-reliance – and I’ve raised my son and daughter to appreciate the same. Outdoor recreation is a great way to spend time with family.

I’ve also been working on a book over the past two years, aiming to share my insights on leadership and performance to help others build strong organizational frameworks.

As part of Ferguson Alliance, I’m excited to continue applying my experience to help family-owned businesses prosper, ensuring they create lasting value and preserve their legacy for future generations.
