Tale of Two Family Businesses: What I’ve Learned About Governance, Leadership, and Legacy
Over the past 15+ years, I’ve been privileged to lead and advise family businesses. In that time, I’ve learned that what separates thriving legacy businesses from those that falter isn’t just strategy or profit margins—it’s governance, leadership, and clarity of purpose.
Recently, I had the chance to join Adam Hill on the Fearless Family Business podcast—and we covered a lot of ground.
In this conversation, I shared some of the most powerful lessons I’ve learned along the way: what happens when you kick the can down the road on succession planning, how leadership shapes culture, and why a “business-first family” mindset can make all the difference.
Here are a few takeaways:
Business-First vs. Family-First
- Functional family businesses prioritize the enterprise; dysfunctional ones prioritize family harmony above all else.
- When your center pole is the business, difficult conversations become possible—and productive.
The Kicked Can of Governance
- Governance practices must start with the first generation.
- Most families delay the hard conversations, expecting the next generation to deal with it—and they often do the same.
- By the fourth or fifth generation, lack of structure and clarity becomes a serious liability.
Yes, You Can Turn It Around
- Dysfunction can be addressed—but only with the right leadership.
- Change starts when someone is willing to be the catalyst.
- Good governance is how you protect your legacy and unlock long-term prosperity (not just profits).
The Three Competing Priorities
Every family business must navigate the balance between:
- Growth
- Control
- Liquidity
You can’t maximize all three. You’ve got to choose two—and accept what you sacrifice.
Don’t Ignore Succession Planning
- The biggest mistake is putting it off.
- It’s not just about exit—it’s about transition.
- Our process helps clients understand the real value at risk if they don’t plan ahead.
Intangible Assets Matter Most
- 75% of your company’s value is tied up in things like leadership, culture, and infrastructure—not just inventory and equipment.
- If everything runs through one person (aka “the benevolent dictator”), the value will tank the moment they exit.
Identity Beyond the Business
- Many founders struggle to imagine life after the business—because their identity is so wrapped up in it.
- I’ve seen clients grieve on the day of their biggest payout—not because they didn’t get a good deal, but because they didn’t know who they were without the business.
- My mission is to help owners rediscover their purpose beyond the company they built.
