Meet
Jay Rosen
Family Business Advisor
I grew up with a deep curiosity about how things work. Not just in business, but in history, economics, and even the universe itself. My formal education focused on finance and economics, but my real education came after graduate school, in the world of business.
I spent 30+ years leading and advising businesses across industries.
I started my career in finance, working my way up from analyst to treasurer of a company before taking on more entrepreneurial and leadership roles. I’ve worked in construction materials, retail, wholesale, healthcare services, and more.
One of the most valuable lessons I learned along the way came from a mentor who believed that every business has a handful of key drivers.
Once you identify them, success is all about managing them effectively. That belief has guided my approach ever since.
Throughout my career, I’ve helped businesses identify their critical success factors, restructure leadership, and create sustainable growth. I’ve stepped into challenging situations - sometimes in the middle of family business disputes, financial restructuring, or leadership transitions - and helped businesses regain stability and direction.
I became an advisor because I enjoy solving complex business problems.
After stepping back from my last executive role, I found that I wasn’t quite ready to walk away from the challenges and rewards of business leadership. I enjoy the intellectual puzzle of diagnosing business issues, figuring out what’s really happening, and putting the right pieces in place.
Joining the Alliance allows me to do what I do best - help businesses untangle their challenges and find a clear path forward. I bring an analytical approach, asking the right questions, studying financials like a doctor reading lab work, and identifying the key factors that determine a company’s success or failure.
My strengths: analytical problem-solving, finance, and leadership in complex situations
I thrive in situations where businesses know something isn’t working but aren’t sure exactly what the problem is. Whether it’s financial structuring, leadership alignment, or operational efficiency, I dig in to uncover the root issues and develop practical solutions.
In family businesses, this often means helping owners and leadership navigate the tricky intersection of business and personal dynamics. I’ve worked with businesses in transition, helping them shift from a family-run operation to a professionally managed company, while still maintaining the values and legacy that matter most.
2 pieces of wisdom: business success is about people…and every problem has a solution
Over the years, I’ve learned two things that hold true across all industries.
First, business is ultimately about people. No matter how strong your financials or strategy, the right (or wrong) people in leadership can make or break a company. In small businesses especially, personnel mistakes can be fatal.
Second, every business problem has a solution. It might not be easy, and it might require making tough decisions, but with the right perspective and the right strategy, there’s always a path forward.
About me personally: I’m fascinated by history and the nature of the universe
I enjoy reading about astrophysics, economics, and history, because they help put everything in perspective. One of the most profound ideas that has stuck with me is Carl Sagan’s reference to Earth as the “Pale Blue Dot” - a reminder that, in the grand scheme of things, we are just a tiny speck in the vast universe. At the end of the day, what we do in business matters most in how it impacts the people around us.
For me, advising businesses isn’t just about numbers and strategies. It’s about helping leaders make better decisions, build stronger companies, and create lasting impact.
