FA Process-Oriented Culture

Building a Process-Oriented Culture in Your Family Business

When we talk about building a process-oriented culture, what we’re really talking about is intentionality.

In a process-oriented culture:

  • Your team understands why they’re doing what they’re doing.
  • They understand how their work contributes to the next step in the process.
  • They can see how every step connects to delivering value for your clients and customers.

In other words, everyone’s work has clear purpose and is connected to something bigger than just completing tasks.

Why Your Business Needs a Process-Oriented Culture

So, what can a process-oriented culture do for your business?

  • A process-oriented culture produces consistency. When you deliver a consistent product or service, clients and customers know what to expect. This consistency builds trust and loyalty.
  • A process-oriented culture empowers your team to make continuous improvements. They understand the best way to make suggestions, helping create a full circle of intentionality and continuous improvement throughout the organization. Asking not just, “How are we doing it?” but “How could we do it even better next time?”
  • A process-oriented culture helps make managing your business so much easier. It makes it easier to align expectations among your team. This is not to say you’ll never make mistakes! Mistakes will still happen. But when you do fall short, you’ll be able to recover much faster if your culture is process oriented.

Creating this type of culture gets your whole team involved. Everyone understands, believes in, and knows what’s going on. And they see how they can make a positive impact through their work.

Signs Your Culture Isn’t Process-Oriented

How can you tell if your business isn’t operating with a strong process-oriented culture? Here are a few signs:

  • Unpredictable results. If your metrics – financial reports, KPIs or other measurements – are all over the place, that’s a sign that processes are lacking. Results vary wildly every time you measure.
  • Team uncertainty. If your team isn’t sure how to make improvements – or isn’t even sure if what they’re doing is correct – that’s another red flag. You’ll see decreased confidence and slower operations, which leads to inefficiencies.
  • Constantly shifting priorities. If priorities constantly change, everything feels like an emergency. Without clear, process-driven priorities, each team member may have a different idea of what’s most important, leading to chaos.

And while you may hope that your clients or customers don’t feel that chaos, chances are they do.

At the end of the day, your goal is to create value for your client or customer – and a lack of process orientation puts that value at risk.

Tips for Developing a Process-Oriented Culture

Here are a few tips to help you develop and strengthen a process-oriented culture:

  • Explain the “why.” Change is hard! At first, building processes can seem unnecessary and maybe even a waste of time. That’s why it’s critical to explain the why behind what you’re doing and to show the team the real benefits.
  • Start before you’re ready. Don’t let perfection get in the way of progress. Sometimes we get caught up trying to map every single step, document everything, think through every scenario – and 12 months later, we’re still planning. Instead, just try something. Create the process as you go and continue to iterate based on what you learn.
  • Measure effectiveness. Make sure you measure whether what you’re doing is making a difference. If it isn’t, people will start to feel like the process is bureaucratic and unnecessary.
  • Get a third-party perspective. Sometimes it’s hard to clearly see your own processes. And that’s exactly where an outside partner can help.

Building a process-oriented culture isn’t always easy, but it’s certainly worth the effort.

By adding structure and consistency, you create a healthy, vibrant, and valuable business that can best serve your employees, your customers or clients, and your family.
