Recently, I had the honor of joining Andrea Houston on the Lead Like a Woman Show podcast to discuss a topic that has shaped my life and career: tough conversations.
Together, we explored the challenges of working in a family business, navigating professional and personal relationships, and ultimately, finding the courage to pursue a new path.
In this blog post, I’ll share key takeaways from that conversation, including lessons I’ve learned about empowering leadership, the power of open dialogue, and how curiosity can transform relationships and organizations.
Lessons from My Time in a Family Business
My career began in my husband’s family business.
Initially, I joined to help with an ERP system project, thinking it would be a short-term stint.
Fourteen years later, I had become a middle manager, deeply embedded in the company.
While I gained invaluable experience, the journey wasn’t without its struggles:
- Balancing Family and Business: Working with family blurred the lines between personal and professional life. Holidays often felt like extensions of board meetings, and expectations—both spoken and unspoken—added pressure.
- Navigating Assumptions: As a daughter-in-law, I sometimes felt I had to prove my qualifications. Some of this stemmed from my own imposter syndrome, while other times it came from perceived expectations within the organization.
- The Weight of Obligation: Growing up in entrepreneurial families, my husband and I felt a deep responsibility to carry on the family legacy, even when we weren’t sure it was the right path for us.
These experiences taught me the importance of setting boundaries, clarifying roles, and communicating openly—all of which were lessons I learned the hard way.
The Importance of Tough Conversations
If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s this: avoiding tough conversations only makes things worse.
I didn’t always handle these situations well, but those challenges taught me how to approach them more effectively:
- Be Clear About What You Need: Tough conversations can feel overwhelming, but they’re much easier when you know what you’re asking for. Whether it’s seeking support or addressing an issue, clarity can make all the difference.
- Replace Judgment with Curiosity: One of the most impactful lessons I’ve learned is to approach situations with curiosity rather than judgment. When we assume less and ask more, we open the door to understanding and solutions.
- Embrace Vulnerability: Admitting when you’re struggling isn’t easy, but it’s essential for growth. Transparency builds trust and lays the groundwork for meaningful change.
Taking the Leap into Consulting
Leaving the family business wasn’t a decision I made lightly.
For years, I wrestled with feelings of guilt and fear of the unknown. But when my family hired Ferguson Alliance to guide us, it opened my eyes to new possibilities.
Working with Rob Ferguson, I realized that stepping away from the business could benefit not just me, but my family as well.
I also discovered a passion for helping others navigate similar challenges. With Rob’s encouragement, I joined Ferguson Alliance, where I now work as a consultant.
Helping Others Navigate Change
Today, I help family businesses create cultures of excellence, develop effective management systems, and build stronger relationships.
My work is driven by the lessons I’ve learned firsthand:
- Be Honest About Your Struggles: It’s okay to admit when you’re overwhelmed or unsure of the next step. The key is to seek support and focus on solutions.
- Celebrate Small Wins: Transformation doesn’t happen overnight. I’ve seen clients make incredible progress one small step at a time, and those moments of growth are what make this work so rewarding.
- Recognize the Value of Relationships: Family businesses are about more than just profits—they’re about people. Prioritizing relationships and communication creates a foundation for long-term success.
Tough conversations are never easy, but they’re a powerful tool for growth—both personally and professionally.
The tough conversations have taught me to value curiosity, embrace change, and pursue a path that aligns with my goals and values.
If you’re experiencing similar challenges in your business, we’d love to help.
Let’s work together to create a culture of growth and excellence, where people thrive and businesses succeed.
